Beautiful HD screen, Fast processor and a possibility of a 1TB drive, great!

I love cowboy coffee. If not so much for the taste, as for the setting. I do a lot of backpacking. I used to use those coffee bags and then discovered cowboy coffee out of necessity when I couldn’t find the bags in the podunk town General Store near the trailhead. When you figure out how to make cowboy coffee it usually tastes better than the bags. Additionally, I feel OK dumping coffee grounds though always pack the bags out with me

Well, I got a great gift from FON, the wonderful spanish visionaries who are creating a great WiFi network for the globe, (if you’re not on board yet, head over to http://fon.com to learn more about it).

On Rosh Hashanah, just prior to going to Tashlich, a UPS package arrived, inside it, a Wifi Skype Fon phone, this one in fact:

It was a surprise to me until I searched gmail for emails containing “fonero”, and enigma solved, look at this, they actually awarded me a phone for completing one of their surveys! What are the odds? Regardless, I’ve now got a wifi skype phone that gives me 1 cent a minute calls to anywhere in the world and unlimited US landline and cell minutes from any Wifi point I come across! Good, no, GREAT!

Check out Fon for yourself, they’re awesome!

<blockqoute>Dear Fonero,

As we informed you in the Survey, we were offering 100 free WiFi phones to the very first Foneros who filled out our survey. Guess what? You were one of them. We want to thank you for the support and your help. Thank you and congratulations you for the prize!

Now we just need your shipping information (address, city, state, country, ZIP code and telephone number), and we will send you the SMC Skype FON phone to your home address. Please send us an email with all your details to cruz.jimenez@fon.com

Thanks,

FON Team</blockqoute>

If you’d like a few tips regards San Francisco, here goes:

You can reserve a Super Shuttle from either of the big airports to wherever you want to go from these guys: http://www.supershuttle.com/ , it’s a really good service and a pretty good way to do the 20/30 min journey.

There are a bunch of interesting and beautiful neighbourhoods in San Francisco, the most famous district is Fishermans Wharf where you can take ferries to Alcatraz or Sausalito (the little bayside village on the north side of the gg bridge).

Haight Ashbury is really close to where I live and is the legendary home of the 60’s hippie revolution, it’s full of vintage and funky stores and is quite fun.

Coit Tower, Yerba Buena Island, The Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge, North Beach and Twin Peaks are all nice spots to see and will be super memories, a great way to catch a lot of these in one day is to bike from Fishermans Wharf along the north shore, past the famous Fort Mason and Marina District through Crissy fields and by the Palace of Fine arts as far as Fort Point (a great viewpoint thats just below the Golden Gate Bridge), that would be a one or two hour ride, with plenty of nice places to get Ice Cream along the way, if your legs can take some more, it’s totally worth biking up the trail to the golden gate bridge entrance where you can bike across to the Marin Headlands, there’s a good vista point just beyond the end of the bridge, but for a REALLY awesome view, continue past the vista point and take the first right, go left under the freeway and continue up the hill, it’s absolutely worth it.

Also, remember to see the Cable Cars, Transamerica Building, Vesuvio, The Mission, The Castro, Pacific Heights, the Museum of Modern Art, The De Young, the Conservatory of flowers, phew! I’m out of breath, so better run on, I hope this mail is helpful and wish you good travels!

Well, Google has this new thing called Google Gears which converts Web Apps (think Google Docs) to offline applications, and I like this because sure MS Office is the best Office software, but sometimes (like tonight) I use Google spreadsheets for making lists, as it’s safe in case the computer goes missing or I need to access the list from another computer, as I typed I looked up Google Gears and the first hurdle was that you MUST use Firefox for Mac if you want to use Google Gears, the second hurdle is that there are no Web Apps except Google Reader (an RSS feedreader) that use Google Gears, so for experimentation, I installed Google Gears, went to Google Reader.

Google Reader has been written about by Styleygeek at his blog, and its a good post, but my observations of it include:

It does a good job importing an OPML file that my existing RSS reader (Vienna) exports.

It’ll keep my feeds synced across multiple Macs

It’ll work offline!

But is it better than Vienna?

RSS is the greatest thing to come from the interweb since email, this tutorial tells you a lot more about RSS, but what I’m writing about here is Vienna.

Vienna is a great RSS feed reader or ‘Aggregator’ for Mac OS X, it’s got a clean UI, supports RSS and Atom, a Built in browser, supports smart folders, folder groups, import and export, scheduled refresh, flagged articles, reading panes, styles, unified layout, article filtering, blogging integration, condensed layout, whew!

The thing is, I’ve got thirty RSS feeds subscribbed to in Vienna on my MacBook, but my Power Mac’s Vienna has only 10 feeds, so today we’re learning how to get the same rss feeds in both.

Vienna has export. so we can simply export the feeds from thhe MacBook and import them to the Power Mac, there will be one missing function and that is syncing, a great article on macsimum news points out how syncing between RSS readers can occur, the caveat: you must use NetNewsWire which then uses .Mac to keep your feeds synced across computers;
“The only thing missing from Vienna is syncing, and that’s not a major problem for me anymore. I used to use NetNewsWire and it was able to use my .mac account to sync my feeds between my 12-inch PowerBook and my iMac at the office. That meant I didn’t have to sort entries twice. But the syncing was erratic at times and when I got my 17-inch MacBook Pro, I was able to use just one computer to read my feeds and Vienna fits the bill quite nicely.”

Read the rest of this article entitled Taking Advantage of RSS here

For me, I’ll export my feeds from the Macbook and import them to the Pwer Mac and that should work fine.

My MacBook is spinning its fans like crazy at the moment, why? I’m not sure… but maybe it’s second life running that is causing the fans to spin like wild, sure enough I just pulled up Activity Monitor and Second Life was using 101% of my cpu, look:

I’ve been reading and learning about Online communities today, World of Warcraft, Second Life, FaceBook, Orkut, Flickr, Last.fm, Myspace, Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heroes etc.

What are you on?

So whats been happening? I’ve been moving into my new place at Haight Street in San Francisco, I’ve rearranged the room for better feng shui and given Lola the cat her own space (though she seems to like the space beside me for unknown reasons…)

Time has just been zipping by and writing a blog has just been tough to do, I think I may need an assistant.

One of Diggs top posts this morning was regarding the fact that iTunes has added “My Alerts” to inform you of when your favorite artists have a new song/album, and a new feature “Complete My Album” which is going to drive album sales and fulfills the wishes that music buyers have had for 40 years.
From the Article: “The feature, called “Complete My Album”, will allow customers who may have already bought individual tracks for 99 cents per song to receive credits for those tracks if they opt to buy the full album.”
When I first heard debates about whether this feature should be present in the iTunes store, I dismissed most proponents of the “Get credit for the single I bought” with the fact that for 40 years, we’ve been purchasing singles by Fatboy Slim, Modest Mouse, and even MC Hammer for between $1.99 and $4.99 (Yes! In Dublin, Ireland a CD Single costs $4.99), two weeks after the first single from the album went on sale (e.g. Gangster Tripping from the album You’ve come a long way Baby by the supreme Fatboy Slim) we went and bought the album too, we’d buy the $4.99 CD Single (or EP) Gangster Tripping love that and then buy the album (priced between $19.99 and $24.99) also, nobody brought their single’s into the Virgin Megastore and asked for $4.99 credit on the EP they already purchased.

iTunes dealt with the “I wanna get the single before the album is released” issue easily, Most Pre release albums sell for $9.99 on iTunes and when pre ordered give you the single two or three weeks before the album is released.

This didn’t provide folks who bought a Modest Mouse song off the album after it was released because they had to spend 99cents on the song and a week later, when they said “this song is so good, I want the album” they had to buy the $9.99 album, these folks felt shortchanged. I always thought it was a fine system as most of these albums are about $15 dollars on Amazon, so $9.99 plus 99cents is a great deal for the convenience that iTunes provides, besides, a lot of albums have only perhaps four, five, or six tracks that you want, the iTunes method of purchasing music allows us to buy just the four songs from that Fatboy Slim album and we never had that option in Virgin Megastore so isn’t that worth the odd 99cents when we decide to buy the entire album?

iTunes today has added the “Complete my Album feature” which gives credits for songs you’ve already purchased off an album, I hadn’t believed it was neccessary but now that it’s been implemented I think its fantastic, I think its going to sell a LOT of albums to people because now, one or two songs from an album aren’t just two songs but they’re a downpayment, you can buy the modest mouse single this week when you’ve a buck spare and another next week when you’ve another buck, but in three weeks, you might say “Hey, why not just buy the whole album, it’s only $7.97 after what I’ve already put down on it.

Fantastico.
