Dreamhost Web Hosting is great.

I’ve been with Dreamhost for ages and read in todays newsletter that I can now refer friends and they get free lifetime domain name registration, thats http://www.yournamehere.com for free, catch? sure! sign up for a yearly or monthly plan, eek! Thats $119.50 for a years hosting!

Here’s the great news though, use the promo code reclaim when checking out and you get $97 off that $119.50, so a years hosting is about $22.50!

Now you’re thinking there MUST be a major catch because godaddy charges $3.99 a month and gives 5 GB diskspace, 500 Email Addresses and 250 GB Transfer allowance for a total of about 12 x $3.99 is $48 and they’re so well known.

Well, listen to this, Dreamhost provides 200 GB Diskspace!, 1.6 TB Transfer Allowance and, oh, 3075 Email addresses!

So there you have it Boys and Girls and Ceth I hope you’re listening, cause you get a lot more than just those technical geeky features mentioned in the paragraph above, you also get one click installs of Blogging, Photo, Ecommerce, CMS and even a virtual sketchpad for your visitors to draw on while at your site. Plus Great support, incredible uptime, the latest Web 2.0 stuff like Ruby on Rails and last but not least an employee owned business with a great sense of humor, Read this excerpt from this months newsletter:

One thing we do value over here in Japan, is honor. Another thing is
loyalty. Let’s get back to this honor thing, because it just reminded me
of an old dirty joke very popular in Kansai; “She offered her honor. He
honored her offer. And all night long, honor, offer, honor, offer.”

Now, let’s go back to loyalty. As I was saying, it is a complete
humiliation in Japan to not work at a single company your entire career.
It is the same deal with consumers as well. To be caught even
*contemplating* switching ISPs, cell phone providers, or even a sleazy
Web Host is to throw yourself to a lifetime of ridicule, celibacy and of
course, KANCHO!

Which is why in Japan, no web host needs to worry about rewarding their
loyal customers as they do in America. That’d be like rewarding a fish
for swimming, a politician for lying, or a DreamHost CEO for being good-
looking.

Lucky for you, YOU’RE (likely) NOT IN JAPAN.. because we’ve just un-
leashed the most kick-flip-iest loyalty reward of our time.

I’m proud to do this plug for Dreamhost because as you see from their technical details they offer more than any other host and a few of my friends are thinking about getting on the have my own site train, so this serves as a tutorial in what your webhost should offer. I hope you’ve enjoyed this.

Remember to use promocode ‘Reclaim’ to get your killer $97 discount!

Welcome to Bittorrent

Hi Beautiful,
iTunes has lots of good movies to buy and legally download but until they have all the movies we have to use bittorrent to download our movies.

Here’s a little intro:

a torrent file is a small file called something like greatmovie.torrent and its about 20k in size and downloads in an instant. it contains locations around the interweb where copies of another file, usually greatmovie.avi, exist.

Once you grab greatmovie.torrent and save it to your desktop, you open the torrentfile with a program that can go to these remote parts of the interwweb and grab that movie file greatmovie.avi

Bittorrent users account for less than 15% of users (geeks like me) but they use 50% of the total bandwidth of the internet, thats how many movies are zipping around the web!

sites that have torrent files are usually seedy places with lots of ads for hot girls, vicodin and free ipods but if you ignore all these ads, you can find torrent files for anything of your choosing, legal downloads like bands who choose to use bittorrent to distribute their songs (e.g.  Kleptones) and grey area downloads like movies that aren’t available in stores (Star Wars 3 was on bittorrent a week before it hit movie theaters)

The best program to manage your torrents on Mac OS X is Transmission, and μtorrent (or utorrent but pronounced mew-torrent). μtorrent is free, has no spyware or ads, doesn’t use up your computers resources like Azureus(the most popular bittorent client) but is really skinny and has no extra features, I still recommend it as the only torrent client for windows :)

The very best torrent site (as in philosophy and less advertising) is http://piratebay.org but the best torrent site(for amount of content and nice search features like sort by seeders(seeders are bittorrent sources with the full file) as opposed to leechers(users with only a piece of the file)) is http://torrentportal.com

With this guide you can now go and find the torrentfile you need, download it to your desktop, get your bittorrent client installed and then drop that torrent file into your bittorrent client program, wait anything from an hour to overnight and you’ll have the movie or album you’re looking for.

Don’t forget to send a check to the director or producer of whatever you downloaded to keep your karma in check!

Update: μtorrent now has a Web User Interface! allowing you to queue up downloads while at the office to download to your Mac or Pc at home!

Endless

Some call me a ‘joiner’, and I guess it’s true, I joined myspace, friendster in the past. Joined flickr (for very good reasons), joined zooomr (for pretty good reasons), but today after reading 43folders.com, I noticed Merlin Mann had set up a tumblelog and browsed tumblr.net, it looks like a great site and method for tumblelogging and signed up over there, tumblelogging is apparently a more casual and informal way of blogging, who knew it could get MORE casual than a blog? But it IS very nice for posting quotes, pictures, conversations and videos to. Following on from tumblr, I discovered vox.com, which seems to be VERY similar to livejournal, but I signed up there too. So I’ve got this blog, Brendan’s Vox page and tumblebrendan. And what does all this do? Just increase web presence. But isn’t that what it’s all about :)

True enough, New York IS the center of the Universe, this blog I found today is good reading: Gawker.com

Jyte.com

Jyte.com is a social website for making ‘Claims’, I discovered it through myopenid and though confused and scared went ahead and tried it out. I like it and recommend yall give it a try. Make a claim, claim that Arctic Monkeys are awesomer than Clap your Hands say yeah, or claim that the moon landings are fake, once you claim it, its your claim forever and people will vote on it forever. Kinda Neat.
Update: Jyte is an acronym for “Just You Tell ‘Em” and is a creation of JanRain, a software company located in Portland, Oregon. All my favorite things these days are from Portland. Hmmm.

Court Orders Google to Pull Belgian News

Google just lost this case in Belgium and is an example of how massive companies can get held back and mired by their success. I’ve been professing Yahoo’s greatness to everybody since I read about Panama a few weeks back and I think this case in belgium highlights the trouble Google will have in innovating in the future. Huge companies grow, grow, grow, then start getting sued left right and center for their innovations (infringing on this that or the other) and get bound up internally with red tape, bureaucracy, an environment like this halts dramatic innovation.
