In Ireland, and other english speaking Europe we have a delicious dessert thats eaten during the Christmas season that we call Christams pudding. Its a HUGE deal, its got more ingredients than you can list, every grandmother has her own blend of spices that go into it, and everybody’s first taste of Christmas Pudding in a crisp cool December is heaven sent.
We prepare the mix anytime from January to November in a year from 1 to 100 years before the Christmas its required, we then cook it once in the oven in a ceramic bowl thats been in the family for a few centuries, and store it ithis same bowl, tightly wrapped until the special day.
It takes a good 3 hours (well maybe less, but as with any good thing, more time is better) to steam this baby up, it’ll be coming out of the steamer a little while after the main meal is served. Let it cool off for a few minutes, turn out onto a silver platter, and serve to your guests!
Before cutting up comes one of the best parts, grab a bottle of some good brandy or whisky, in a pinch any 80% proof liquor will do, but the better the Brandy the happier your guests will be, and seeing as Happiness is the supreme motivator, lets visualize some Happy Christmas Pudding eating guests and pour that 20 year old Scottish Brandy on the steaming pudding(this is starting to sound like erotica) and grab a zippo, making sure there are no flammable christmas decorations within flame reach of the delicious pudding, hold the flame from the zippo to the pudding, you’ll get something like this when you do that. Let the flame burn out by itself (its burning off the alcohol only, the lovely flavour of Brandy will still be there).
While the flames were burning you fetched that delicious Custard(another treat the americans have missed out on thusfar) and the Brandy Cream you whipped up earlier and have these on the Table now too.
Serve up Big slices of Christmas Pudding with lashings and lashings of Custard and Brandy Cream. Remember to do this all in a setting reminiscent of “The Importance of Being Earnest”s Country Villa location, or perhaps another of Wildes slightly decadent and luxurious settings. When all your guests are plump and full, you’re goals are met and you can begin to measure the success of your Christmas Pudding by the width of the smiles you see around the Living room as you retire with Cigars and Coffees for some Christmas board games.
