Welcome to Bittorrent

Hi Beautiful,
iTunes has lots of good movies to buy and legally download but until they have all the movies we have to use bittorrent to download our movies.

Here’s a little intro:

a torrent file is a small file called something like greatmovie.torrent and its about 20k in size and downloads in an instant. it contains locations around the interweb where copies of another file, usually greatmovie.avi, exist.

Once you grab greatmovie.torrent and save it to your desktop, you open the torrentfile with a program that can go to these remote parts of the interwweb and grab that movie file greatmovie.avi

Bittorrent users account for less than 15% of users (geeks like me) but they use 50% of the total bandwidth of the internet, thats how many movies are zipping around the web!

sites that have torrent files are usually seedy places with lots of ads for hot girls, vicodin and free ipods but if you ignore all these ads, you can find torrent files for anything of your choosing, legal downloads like bands who choose to use bittorrent to distribute their songs (e.g.  Kleptones) and grey area downloads like movies that aren’t available in stores (Star Wars 3 was on bittorrent a week before it hit movie theaters)

The best program to manage your torrents on Mac OS X is Transmission, and μtorrent (or utorrent but pronounced mew-torrent). μtorrent is free, has no spyware or ads, doesn’t use up your computers resources like Azureus(the most popular bittorent client) but is really skinny and has no extra features, I still recommend it as the only torrent client for windows :)

The very best torrent site (as in philosophy and less advertising) is http://piratebay.org but the best torrent site(for amount of content and nice search features like sort by seeders(seeders are bittorrent sources with the full file) as opposed to leechers(users with only a piece of the file)) is http://torrentportal.com

With this guide you can now go and find the torrentfile you need, download it to your desktop, get your bittorrent client installed and then drop that torrent file into your bittorrent client program, wait anything from an hour to overnight and you’ll have the movie or album you’re looking for.

Don’t forget to send a check to the director or producer of whatever you downloaded to keep your karma in check!

Update: μtorrent now has a Web User Interface! allowing you to queue up downloads while at the office to download to your Mac or Pc at home!
